Lighting Towers

Client

Port of Napier

Overview

As part of the Port Of Napier expansion an additional 5 x 33 meter high lighting towers were required by the client to illuminate the newly reclaimed land which is used for container storage.

Patton’s Involvement

After winning a competitive tender for the manufacture and installation of the 5 towers, Patton Engineering were able to apply their expertise in fabricating, surface finishing, delivering and installing the towers to the client’s time frame.

Materials

The tower columns were fabricated from spiral wound pipe sourced direct from Steel Pipes NZ. The remainder of the steel fabrication, including the crow’s nest on top of the tower, utilised standard sections as well as custom profiles.

The towers were finished with a sophisticated 3 coat corrosion protection system required for the coastal marine environment, which is expected to provide 25 years of continuous service provided it is properly maintained. One feature of the towers was to install a proprietary Railock Fall Arrestor System for the personal protection of those using the tower.

Our Comment

This was a successful project for both Patton Engineering and the Port of Napier being completed within a tight timetable while providing some challenges in the handling of the 33m tall structures.
